If you have ever compared a Western horoscope with a Vedic birth chart, you may have noticed that your sun sign shiftsâoften by one whole rashi. Someone born on August 10 might be a Leo in Western astrology but a Cancer in Jyotish. The reason is not a mistake. It is ayanamsa, a correction built into Vedic calculations to account for a slow wobble in Earth's rotation that changes where the zodiac sits against the stars.

What ayanamsa measures
Ayanamsa is the angular distance, measured in degrees and minutes, between two ways of dividing the sky. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which fixes Aries at the spring equinox every year, regardless of which constellation the sun actually occupies. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which aligns the twelve rashis with the twelve constellations as they appear in the sky. Because of precessionâa slow gyroscopic drift in Earth's axisâthe equinox point slides backward through the constellations at about 50 arc-seconds per year. Over twenty-five thousand years it completes one full cycle. The ayanamsa is simply how far the two systems have drifted apart at any given moment.
Why the number changes every year
When the Surya Siddhanta was composed, the spring equinox and the start of sidereal Aries roughly coincided. By the year 2000, they had separated by about 23 degrees 51 minutes. Today the figure is closer to 24 degrees 10 minutes, and it grows by roughly 50 seconds each year. This is why older Jyotish software and newer versions of the same program can produce charts that differ by a few minutes of arc. The ayanamsa value is recalculated for the date and time of birth, so two people born a decade apart will have slightly different correction factors applied to their planetary longitudes.
The Lahiri ayanamsa and other systems
In 1955 the Calendar Reform Committee of the Government of India recommended a standard ayanamsa for civil and religious purposes. The astronomer N. C. Lahiri proposed a formula that set the zero pointâwhen tropical and sidereal Aries last coincidedâat March 21, 285 CE, with the star Chitra (Spica) as the reference. This is now called the Lahiri ayanamsa or Chitrapaksha ayanamsa, and it is the default in most Jyotish software, including the calculations on our free kundli page.
Other traditions use different zero dates. The Krishnamurti ayanamsa, popular in certain branches of stellar astrology, differs from Lahiri by about six minutes. The Raman ayanamsa, named after B. V. Raman, is close to Lahiri but uses a slightly different epoch. Regional schools in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Bengal sometimes follow older values recorded in temple almanacs. None of these is wrong; they reflect different scholarly choices about when and how to anchor the sidereal frame. Golden Kundli uses Lahiri because it is the civil standard and the one most widely taught, but we note the ayanamsa value on every chart so that readers who follow another system can adjust if needed.

How ayanamsa affects your chart
The same correction that shifts your sun sign also shifts your moon sign, ascendant and the positions of all nine grahas. A planet at 5 degrees tropical Taurus becomes roughly 11 degrees sidereal Aries once you subtract the current ayanamsa. Because rashis are thirty degrees wide, most planets move back by one sign, though a planet near the cusp in the tropical chart may stay in the same sidereal rashi or jump two signs depending on its exact degree.
Dashas, yogas and divisional charts all depend on sidereal longitudes, so the ayanamsa indirectly affects every layer of interpretation. A person running Venus mahadasha in a Vedic chart might be in a completely different period according to a tropical system. This is why mixing the two approachesâusing Western sign placements with Vedic dashas, for instanceâproduces incoherent results.
What this means for you
If you were raised reading Western horoscopes and then encounter Jyotish, the shift can feel disorienting. You may have identified as a Scorpio for years, only to learn that your Vedic sun sits in Libra. The qualities you thought defined you seem to move. This is normal. Vedic astrology does not ask you to discard what resonates; it offers a different lens, one calibrated to the stars as they are, not as they were two thousand years ago. Both systems have internal consistency. The question is which framework you find more useful for the kind of self-knowledge you seek.

You do not need to choose one zodiac and reject the other. Many people consult both, treating them as complementary views. Western astrology, with its emphasis on psychological archetypes and seasonal symbolism, can describe inner weather. Vedic astrology, with its attention to karma, dashas and remedial measures, can describe the timing and texture of events. The ayanamsa is not a problem to solve. It is a feature of the system, a correction that keeps the sidereal zodiac honest about where the planets actually are.
